How Google Ads Works in the US (and When It's Worth It)
How Search, Performance Max and YouTube fit together, what clicks really cost in the US, and the tracking you need before spending a dollar.
Google Ads sells intent: your ad appears when someone types a buying question. In the US that intent is expensive — legal, finance and home-service clicks commonly run $8–$40+ — which is exactly why structure and tracking matter more than budget.
Search campaigns capture demand that already exists. Performance Max and YouTube create and harvest demand more broadly, but need good conversion data to optimise. New accounts with no history should start narrow: exact-match search on your most commercial terms, tight geography, and a landing page that matches the promise.
Before spending, wire up real conversion tracking: qualified inquiries, not page views. Connect GA4, import offline conversions if sales close by phone, and agree what a lead is worth. Without this, Google optimizes for the cheapest clicks, not the best customers.
What this means in practice
Google Ads is worth it when lifetime value comfortably exceeds acquisition cost and you can follow up fast. It is not worth it as a substitute for a broken website — fix the bucket before buying more water.
The takeaway
Start from the customer’s question, fix measurement and follow-up before buying traffic, and compound what proves itself. If you’d like help applying this to your business, talk to Auspira — or explore our digital marketing services.
